How to Measure Men’s Pants

We use 6 fit points to help you build your Pant Fit Profile. In this article, we’ll show you how to navigate the following fit points: Waist, Fit (Seat & Thigh), Rise, Knee, Ankle, and Inseam Length.

Waist

Waist is your pants primary fit option. Your pant is built from the waist down.

We add 2″ to the labeled waist size. For example a 34 waist will measure 36″. Adding 1 1/2 – 2″ is an industry average, meaning our pant waist measurement will be in-line with most pant brands. For this reason, we recommend starting with your normal pant waist size.

How to Measure Waist

To gauge your Todd Shelton waist size, you can measure a pant you already own.

Start with your best fitting pant, preferably laundered or cleaned (not stretched from wear). Lay your pant on a rigid table (not a bed or other soft surface) like shown above. Pull the outside edges of the waistband outwards to remove any slack. Measure across in the center of the waistband – the edges of your measurement should not exceed the outside edges of the waistband.

Measure again to make sure your measurements are consistent. Match your measurement to the list below.

  • Labeled Waist Size = Measurement Across Waistband
  • 28 = 15
  • 29 = 15 1/2
  • 30 = 16
  • 31 = 16 1/2
  • 32 = 17
  • 33 = 17 1/2
  • 34 = 18
  • 35 = 18 1/2
  • 36 = 19
  • 37 = 19 1/2
  • 38 = 20
  • 39 = 20 1/2
  • 40 = 21
  • 41 = 21 1/2
  • 42 = 22

To be thorough, you can put the pant on (the one you just measured) and think about how you would change the fit to make it better.

Fit (Seat & Thigh)

Fit is the area below the waistband down to the lower thigh (above the knee). We offer 7 fits for this area. The following fits are separated by 1″ around the seat and 1/2″ around the thighs.

  • Fit (Ranking of popularity)
  • Lean (18%)
  • Lean/Basic (5%)
  • Basic (44%)
  • Basic/Relaxed (12%)
  • Relaxed (17%)
  • Relaxed/Athletic (2%)
  • Athletic (2%)

We recommend you choose Fit based on the size of your upper legs (do not select fit by the fit name).

Our Basic fit is a Regular pant fit, for guys with average-sized upper legs. Relaxed is for guys who have larger than average upper legs. Lean is for guys who find regular fitting pants too roomy. Athletic is for guys with very big thighs (it is reserved for the top % of big thigh guys).

Finally, we offer 3 in-between Fits for fine tuning. These in-between fits are: Lean/Basic, Basic/Relaxed, and Relaxed/Athletic.

How to Measure Fit (Seat & Thigh)

To gauge your Todd Shelton Seat & Thigh Fit, you can measure a pant you already own.

Start with your best-fitting pant through the seat and thigh, preferably laundered or cleaned (not stretched from wear). Lay your pant on a rigid table like shown above. Smooth the pant flat, pulling out any excess fabric that may be folded underneath the pant.

We measure the seat 3″ above the crotch seam, across the pant. Starting at 3″ above the crotch seam, measure across the pant. Write that number down, then double it (for example, if you measure 20″ across, double it to 40″), for your total seat circumference. Measure again to make sure your measurements are consistent.

Compare your total seat circumference measurement to the Measurement Chart.

We measure the thigh at crotch point, across leg (shown above). Compare your thigh measurement to the Measurement Chart.

You can also email us the measurements you take and we’ll help you match your measurements to our sizes.

Keep in mind, seat and thigh areas are stress areas. Pressure is applied to the fabric when sitting, causing these areas to stretch with wear. Take stretching into account when evaluating your fit.

Front Rise

Rise is an overlooked fit point because menswear brands don’t offer rise options. Rise affects where a pant sits on your waist. The following rise options are available.

  • 3/8″ Lower Rise
  • Standard Rise
  • 3/4″ Higher Rise
  • 1 1/2″ Higher Rise

Although Standard Rise works for the vast majority of our customers, some customers need rise increases or decreases.

How to Measure Front Rise

Rise is measured from the top of the waistband down to the crotch seam.

To understand the rise you need, you can measure a pant you already own. Start with your best-fitting pant, measure the front rise (as shown above). Compare your measurement to our Rise Chart.

How to Order Rise

Rise is a custom option, reserved for existing customers who already know their Todd Shelton fit. New customers can access non-Standard rises by ordering a Fit Kit Home Try-On to first identify their waist and fit, or through an exchange of their Standard Rise pant.

Knee to Ankle

Knee is one fit point. Ankle is a different fit point.

Generally, and for most customers, knee and ankle options go together. But some customers need to separate them. Example: customers with bigger thighs above the knee, bigger knees, or bigger calves may choose a Straight Knee and a Standard Ankle – or a Standard Knee and a Slim Ankle. The wider knee provides extra room through the lower thigh and calf.

Here are the Knee to Ankle options available online. Bootcut is available upon request.

  • Slim (3/8″ less wide at knee and 1/2″ less wide at ankle than Standard)
  • Standard (Most Popular)
  • Straight (3/8″ more wide at knee and 1/2″ more wide at ankle than Standard)
  • Bootcut (3/4″ more wide at knee and 1″ more wide at ankle than Standard)

Ankle measurements are static for all inseam lengths. For example, if our Measurement Guide shows a 7″ Ankle, it will be 7″ regardless of whether the pant is a 26″ Length or 36″ Length.

How to Measure Knee and Ankle

To gauge your Todd Shelton Knee to Ankle fit, you can measure a pant you already own.

Start with your best-fitting pant around your knee and ankle, measure both Knee and Ankle like shown above. Knee is measured 14″ below the crotch seam. Ankle is measured just above the bottom hem (measuring on the hem may add bulk that skews your measurement).

Consider adjustments you’d like to make, then compare your target measurement to our Measurement Chart.

Inseam Length

Customers have different preferences for lengths, we generally advise the pant stops at the top of your shoe. Or top of the shoe plus 1/2″.

New customers can choose lengths in 1″ increments from 28 to 36. We ask new customers who need lengths below 28 or greater than 36 to start with Fit Kit Home Try-On. Existing customers can choose lengths in 1/2″ increments in any length (upon request).

How to Measure Inseam Length

Inseam Length is measured from the crotch seam to the bottom of hem. To gauge your Todd Shelton Inseam Length, you can measure a pant you already own. Start with a pant with the best-fitting length. Lay your pant on a rigid table, keep the outseam (not inseam) straight and measure (as shown above). Then consider adjustments you’d like to make.
